Review

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, previously known as Metal Gear Solid: Rising, is an action videogame developed by Platinum Games and published by Konami. It is available for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This installment of Metal Gear saga is a sequel to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

The gameplay style and controls have dramatically changed since previous chapters of the franchise. “Tactical Espionage Action” is now “Lighting Bolt Action” to match the current main character. We will play as Raiden, protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and secondary character in MGS 4. In fact, the word raiden means “Lightning and Thunder” in Japanese.

Slashing Frenzy

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is focused in two elements: brutal attacks with swords and some kind of action-oriented stealth.

The story takes place in 2018, ten years after the events occurred in Guns of the Patriots. Raiden is a cyborg that works for Maverick PMC (Private Military Company) as he tries to earn some money for his family. Members of a rival PMC, Desperado Enterprises, are the main antagonists in this title.

As in previous installments, this new Metal Gear title requires you to use stealth to success. This title is focused on two elements: brutal attacks with swords, and some kind of action-oriented stealth. Zan-Datsu (cut and take) will be an important element, and it will involve cutting up your enemies and taking parts of dismembered cyborgs and robots. Taking these parts you will increase life, energy, ammunition, equipment and even information.

Your sword will slash through almost everything.
Your sword will slash through almost everything.

You will have to use your high-frequency sword to engage in third-person close combats and pierce enemies or objects accurately across a geometric plane using free slicing mode. Almost every object in the game can be sliced up, including vehicles and enemies. However, some environmental elements were intentionally restricted to make things easier - structures like pillars or walls etc. Free slicing mode is similar to other aiming methods seen in previous installments of the saga, but it displays a special reticule that the player controls: a blue, semi-transparent plane which can be rotated and moved freely, tracing orange lines through surfaces and objects to indicate where the cuts will happen. This mode can also be used in “bullet time”, giving players the chance to slash through objects accurately in action moments.

Stealth will make Raiden’s agility and speed shine. In previous titles you had to stay quiet, waiting for the perfect moment to avoid combat. In Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, you will jump towards enemies fast as lightning and use acrobatic maneuvers to stay out of sight until they are close enough to be mercilessly slashed.
